Artist Insight with Ian Silver
We sat down with Ian (@Iantothewild) to ask him some question about his background with photography, what gear he uses, favorite shoot locations and much more.
Which camera do you use?
Currently I use a Canon 6d and my daily driver is a Sigma 35 Art Series 1.4 Lens
But I’m anxiously awaiting the new Canon releases!
Do you prefer to use a tripod, or freehand?
I love both! It just depends on the shot and style I’m going for.
I shoot a lot of Astrophotography so a Tripod is a must!
What are some of your favorite locations to shoot?
I live in Sedona, Arizona known for its majestic Red Rock formations.
So going into my backyard and being able to capture what a lot of people wish to see is a blessing.
I also enjoy shooting anywhere with water or lots of clouds to add some elements and mood to my shots.
What time of day do your prefer to shoot, night or day?
I prefer shooting sunrise or sunset as Arizona is known to get some pretty harsh light if there isn’t any cloud coverage.
I also really enjoy shooting at night or during a new moon to capture the Milky Way and everything we can’t normally see.
What brought you into photography?
I’ve always had a creative eye but once I picked up a camera it was life changing.
I think if you shoot enough the camera becomes an extension of yourself.
How long do you spend editing a photo?
I usually spend at least 30 minutes on an image but sometimes it can become quite intense and I’ve definitely spent hours on a single image before.
Which program(s) do you use for editing?
Currently I use LR but I’ve been learning a little bit of PS and it’s a whole new world!
Do you have any advice for someone getting into photography?
Shoot, Shoot and Shoot! Try not to overthink your shots and just have fun. Once you stop having fun it just becomes a task and not a passion.
What type of images do you think your presets are best suited for?
I would say my presets are best used with portraits and or moody landscape shots. Although they can be manipulated and used with most everything I’ve noticed.
Do you have any tips or tricks for users of your presets?
With my presets I’ve given you a “base” to work with from there just adjust minor touches and you should come out with a quality edit! (sometimes the preset doesn’t need any adjusting)
Your best tip for post-processing an image.
BE PATIENT! Try and take your time and really look at every part of the image. Just keep things natural and let your creativity flow.
What inspired you to get involved in the AOV community?
Since I became part of this “IG” community I’ve always looked up to the Art Of Visuals team and movement.
I am beyond blessed and grateful to be part of this and can’t wait to see what the future holds. They are a very talented and motivated brand that truly put the artist(s) first.
Thanks Art of Visuals for making this happen!
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m 26 almost 27. I’ve been shooting professionally for 2 years now. My main focus is natural light and astrophotography but I don’t put myself in one lane as I always try to challenge myself. I currently live in Sedona, Arizona with my fiancé and our 5 month old son Rylan.
Being a father and photographer has to be the best two jobs I could ask for. Everyday I get to wake up and do what I love to support my family. I hope I can inspire some people to stick with it and pursue their passion as a photographer because although it doesn’t come easy its totally worth it and so rewarding.
