Artist Insight - Gareth Davies

We sat down with Gareth @87shots to ask him some question about his background with photography, what gear he uses, favorite shoot locations and much more.

Which camera do you use?

Canon 5D MKiii with Sigma 35mm and Samyang 14mm

Do you prefer to use a tripod, or freehand?

Freehand mainly, but for some night stuff a tripod is essential

What are some of your favorite locations to shoot?

New York is a photographers dream, gym gritty street shots to views from way up its my idea of heaven. LA is very aesthetically pleasing and easy on the eye, city and beach so best of both worlds. Of course my home city London i love, so many places to shoot all over the city, with some great architecture.

What time of day do your prefer to shoot, night or day?

I used to prefer night but over the past year I've began to prefer daytime shooting. Although the Sigma 35mm 1.4 means you can shoot anytime

What brought you into photography?

I've always had a camera since i was 17, but was never fully committed to it a hobby. Only in the past 18 months I've got back into it properly. One of my close friends Rahoul suggested we go to an instameet and i was hooked again.

How long do you spend editing a photo?

Depends on the shot, some shots need little editing. But you want to make sure every detail is 100%. On average i would say 10 minutes

Which program(s) do you use for editing?

Adobe Lightroom

Do you have any advice for someone getting into photography?

Just shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Find what you love to shoot and go from there.

What type of images do you think your presets are best suited for?

I'd say architecture, cityscapes, street photography

Do you have any tips or tricks for users of your presets?

Play with the blacks, shadows, saturation and the tone curve - these can make or break your image

Your best tip for post-processing an image.

Ensure stuff like straightening your image and any lens correction is done before anything else so you remove distortion etc. Then simply find your own style and go from there. Play around with the colours, shadows / highlights etc.

What inspired you to get involved in the AOV community?

Such a vast community that reaches out to so many people with the same creative mindset. Being part of something so huge can only be a positive.

Add a little bit about yourself

I live in London, UK. I love to travel, camera always ready to shoot on sight. I'm always trying to improve my skills whether its behind the lens or post processing. Second love is football (soccer) that, like photography i cannot live without!
