Artist Insight with Kyle Rowe
We sat down with Kyle Rowe (@K_Rowejo) to ask him some question about his background with photography, what gear he uses, favorite shoot locations and much more.
Which camera do you use?
Last summer I bought my first camera, which was a Canon Rebel T6i. When I bought the camera I knew very little about photography, however it was recommended by a friend as a good "intro" or beginner camera. It performed as advertised, as a great crop-sensor camera. As I became more familiar with the different type of cameras, I knew one day need to upgrade to a full frame. I recently sold the T6i and purchase a Canon 6D. I have had it for a few weeks now, and so far I love it!
Do you prefer to use a tripod, or freehand?
Freehand, although I usually take my tripod everywhere. I like the feeling of having the camera in my hands while I shoot, having the ability to change perspectives and shootings angles just as fast as I can think of them. I'll use a tripod anytime I want to shoot long exposures, milky way, star trails, etc
What are some of your favorite locations to shoot?
My photography style is mainly based around nature. Living in Arizona, I do not have to go far to find some pretty incredible scenes to shoot. Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Horseshoe Bend, Sedona, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon. A lot of people think of Arizona as just a hot desert, which couldn't be further from the truth. These awesome places give me a chance to bring my own style to life.
What time of day do your prefer to shoot, night or day?
Sunset! Especially on a partly cloudy day. I love the way the sun colors the sky. Arizona sunsets are the best!
What brought you into photography?
When I moved to Arizona in 2014 I took advantage of all the awesome hiking trails it had to offer. Didn't take me long to fall in love with the state and the scenery of the southwest. After I got tired of taking photos on my cell phone and gopro, I bought my first camera and started taking it seriously.
How long do you spend editing a photo?
A long time! Although it varies from photo to photo. I will usually edit, then re-edit a photo dozens of times until I am satisfied. Call it a photographer's OCD.
Which program(s) do you use for editing?
Mostly Adobe Lightroom. I will use Photoshop when creating composites or stacked images.
Do you have any advice for someone getting into photography?
Have fun! Do it because you love it. If you want to take it seriously, do some research on how to operate your camera settings and some post processing techniques. You'll never be done learning new things. Try to find your own creative style.
What type of images do you think your presets are best suited for?
I tried to create my presets to each fit a different type of shot, from vibrate sunsets to moody landscapes.
Do you have any tips or tricks for users of your presets?
Use this presets at a starting point. Slightly increase or decrease the intensity of the adjustments settings until you are pleased with the photo..
Your best tip for post-processing an image
This is the part where you put your signature on a photo. How you edit a photo will likely determine your style. Be creative and have fun.
What inspired you to get involved in the AOV community?
This community brings together artists and creative minds across the globe, providing insight to photographers of all skill levels. I've always viewed AOV as the "top dog" on IG. I'm honored to be apart of the AOV community.
A little bit about yourself
My name is Kyle Rowe. I am a 26 year old mechanical engineer, currently living in Scottsdale, Arizona. Two years ago I decided to move out of my hometown in Massachusetts and pursue my career out here in the desert. I developed a great appreciation of the outdoors, and I wanted to capture it. I owe my love for photography to that decision.
